Your neighbourhood positions you alongside homes, shops, schools, businesses and local people all of which have a story to tell.
God gives us ample opportunity to show His love through our own lives as well as providing the tools needed to better community. There is no more of a perfect place to start than in our very own neighbourhood.
The grass isn’t greener on the other side; the grass is greener where we water it. Here are some ideas of how we can plant seeds of friendship and conversation with our neighbours, local baristas and shop assistants using our Story Culture framework:
LEARN YOUR NEIGHBOUR’S NAME
Sometimes we can live in a house for years and have no idea of who lives to the left and right side of us. Knowing your neighbour’s name is a stepping stone into a potential growing relationship with them. Plus it gives you a better chance of having a conversation with them the next time you step out of your front door.
INVITE YOUR NEIGHBOURS ROUND FOR SOME FOOD
You don’t have to be the next Jamie Oliver to open up your home at meal time. Inviting someone into our home can mean a lot to that individual; they feel valued, trusted and wanted. It’s a winner because who is going to say no to free food?!
LOOK AFTER THE STREET
Don’t just work on your own home, why not make sure your street is tidy? We could do a spot of gardening for an elderly neighbour, litter pick on the road, grit the paths when it gets icy or simply offer to wash someone’s car. Little acts of generosity make a big difference to the people.
Now go create some stories where you live and don’t forget to let us know how it went!
