There can be no greater joy than welcoming a baby into your family unit. It’s a wonderful and exciting time of celebration. Children are a gift from God and having your baby dedicated is the perfect opportunity to mark the occasion and set your new season up well under His grace.
It was Hannah (in the Bible) who said of her new arrival: “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” (1 Samuel 1:27-28)
There are number of reasons why dedicating babies is important:
- Friends and the wider family can celebrate this wonderful moment with the parents
- Parents make a promise to raise the child in the ways of God and submit their child to His protection
- The church community have an opportunity to pray for the family as well as commit to helping support the family
Furthermore, it allows the parents to have good conversations with our team about available resources out there to help them lead their new arrival well. One of our values at TCC is servanthood, and our team are passionate about serving families in a relational and individual way. Parents find encouragement, prayer and support as in this significant time through this process.
We welcome all those with babies to register their interest as we host Baby Dedications at least twice annually.
It’s also important to note that dedicating a baby is not an “infant baptism”. We believe that dedication is the choice of the parent to raise the child in the ways of God and Water Baptism is a decision made by an individual when mature enough (as a personal decision to follow Jesus for themselves). Another difference is that a baptism is performed in water whereas no water is used during a Baby Dedication.
So what does a Baby Dedication look like? During a gathering, parents/guardians will be asked onto stage (with their children) where they will receive a special hand-picked Bible verse. This verse acts as a promise for the child for the future and a statement of hope. A leader then leads the church in a prayer over the family and celebrate this wonderful new season.
