Did you know that God has a story? Yep, that’s right.
We can see it best when we read the Bible. Not only is the Bible full of stories about people and situations but it also reveals a wider narrative about God’s character and plan.
God has always been who He is: a creator, a loving Father, a forgiver and provider among many other things. He is perfect and always does the right thing; the Bible calls Him ‘Holy’.
As we look at the broader story of the Bible, we can pick out four key elements that humanity and God move through. These four movements are:
We have been created in the image of God, our identity and wholeness are found in Him. When the first man was created (Adam, found in Genesis 1), God walks with him and has a genuine relationship with Adam. Adam experiences wholeness, life in completion, purpose, acceptance and no shame. This is where we all desire to be; in a close relationship with our Creator.
God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
– Genesis 1:27
We all do things wrong that separate us from wholeness. Adam made a big mistake, he was disobedient to what is right and the way God intended life to be. The consequence of this meant separation from God, and this is where we’ve have been since then. We’ve been in a state of imperfection and separation from God, away from wholeness and everlasting life.
All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
– Romans 3:23
Our falling grieves our heavenly father so He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to redeem us because He loves us. His death paid the price for the consequence of our actions. We don’t deserve heaven after death or freedom in this life, but God gives it to us nonetheless. Jesus is the way back to our creator, back to wholeness and life. He redeems us from our old way of living, our old way of believing and brings us into a new life with God.
God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
– John 3:16
Finally, The Holy Spirit restores us back to our origin. We become whole again and healed, walking side-by-side with God. Every day, He restores belief, hope, life, purpose and everything good to us.
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun!
– 2 Corinthians 5:17
You see these chapters through the lives of people in the Bible. Moses, for example, murdered a man and ran away from his people. God called him to walk with him and he rescued the nation of Israel from their Egyptian oppressors (Book of Genesis). Another example is Ruth. She had it tough. Ruth experiences incredible loss in her life and decides to follow God more fervently. She ends up marrying the man of her dreams and starting her life from scratch (The Book of Ruth). Then there’s Peter. He cut off a man’s ear with a sword in an altercation and denied he even knew Jesus when threatened. But afterwards Jesus calls him to lead his people and he becomes the leader of the modern day church (The Gospels & The Book of Acts).
This is the story of us as much as it is God’s. We are created, we fall, we are redeemed and restored. Read What’s Your Story to discover your own personal journey.
